Weigh-in, Monday March 29 1999Light Blue and heavy BluesC. DoddFive out the last seven Boat Races have been won by the lighter crew, a statistic that favours Cambridge in the 145th race on Saturday after yesterday's weigh-in. Oxford's average weight is 14 st 10 lbs, half a pound a man heavier than Cambridge. If you add in the dead weight of the cox, Oxford's Neil O'Donnell at 7 st 13 and a half pounds is more than a stone heavier than Cambridge's Vian Sharif at 6st 10 and a half pounds. Make of the figures what you will. Other figures to aid your betting slip are that Cambridge's No 4 Josh West from New Mexico is the tallest ever at 6ft 9ins, and Cambridge's bow man Toby Wallace weighs 15st 2lb, the heaviest man ever to occupy the sharp end of a Boat Race crew. The first race under the new sponsor's banner, Aberdeen Asset Management, promises to be as hard to predict as choosing your last-ever PEP. William Hill are quoting at 5 to 6 for both crews, which means that their spies have learnt nothing from last week's training camps away from the Putney to Mortlake course - Cambridge in Nottingham and Oxford in Amsterdam. The bookies are copping out, while both presidents report excellent progress towards Saturday. Now, there's a surprise. Oxford are nothing if not polyglot, having a Swede, a German, a Canadian and three Americans on board, while Cambridge almost match them with two Americans, a German and a Canadian president. In both cases the wunderkinds find themselves in the stroke seat - Oxford with the world champion and Olympic silver medalist Colin von Ettingshausen and Cambridge with the under-23 international Tim Wooge.
